Cayo Santa Maria

Quick Facts:

Location – 

Cayo Santa Maria is a small island on the North side of Cuba, it is connected to the main land by a causeway. The island is only 16 km long and 2 km wide.

Weather –

Average day time temperatures range between 22 and 30 degrees Celsius. There are two seasons, dry season and wet season. Dry season runs from November – April and wet or rainy season runs from May through October.

Getting around –

Your transfer to and from the airport to your resort will be included when you book a package vacation. If you are planning to venture off property it is recommended that you purchase an excursion through your tour operator or resort.

Currency –

The official currency of Cuba is the Cuban Convertible Peso which you can only exchange while in Cuba.  You can bring Canadian or Euros to exchange for Pesos however US dollars incur extra fees, so avoid them if you can. Major credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard are accepted as long as they are not issued by a US bank.

Language spoken –

Spanish is the official language in Cuba. In tourist areas English is commonly spoken by resort staff although it is not their first language.

Electricity –

The common voltage used in Cuba is 220 volts; therefore if you are travelling from Canada or the US you will need a convertor to use any of your electrical appliances.

Excursions –

There are many marine based excursions available to you while in Cayo Santa Maria which is a great opportunity to see all the island has to offer. Options such as catamaran cruises, sunset cruises, deep sea fishing, scuba diving and jeep safaris are just a few examples. Check your tour operator’s website for the most current offerings.

Shopping –

Puebla La Estrella is a town situated near some of the large resorts. Here you will find dining, bars, bowling, disco, billiards and a spa.

Pueblo Las Dunas is located between the Melia resort properties and offers many services as well.
